Basketball Recap: Calhoun Falls Despite Big Games from Cooper Morris and Brennen Carpenter

Calhoun lost against Gilmer County back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Calhoun Red Devils took a 56-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Gilmer County Titans. The Red Devils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the defeat, Calhoun had strong showings from Brennen Carpenter, who almost dropped a double-double with 16 points and nine boards, and Cooper Morris, who went 6 of 11 on his way to 17 points. The match was Carpenter's third in a row with at least 16 points.

Even though they lost, Calhoun smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 19 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Gilmer County's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Zachariah Wine, who dropped a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Wine continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Kolten Holbert, who went 5 for 11 to rack up 17 points and five boards.

Calhoun's loss dropped their record down to 4-11. As for Gilmer County, their win bumped their record up to 5-13.

Calhoun has already played their next game, a 66-30 defeat against Wirt County on the 10th. As for Gilmer County, they will take on Webster County at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Gilmer County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five matches -- so hopefully Webster County likes a good challenge.
