Preview: Morenci Wildcats vs. St. David Tigers
Two dominant players in Tiara Jones and Anissa Jacquez are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Morenci Wildcats and the St. David Tigers will round out the year against one another at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 22 to 15 on the offensive boards, a fact Morenci proved last Monday. They walked away with a 53-41 win over Benson. The win made it back-to-back wins for Morenci.
Morenci found their leader in underclassman Jones, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. The game was Jones' third in a row with at least ten points. Elena Leonard was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with six steals.
Meanwhile, St. David put another one in the bag last Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. The stars were shining brightly for them in a 49-33 victory over Safford. Given St. David's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 13th, while Safford is ranked 197th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
The win got Morenci back to even at 5-5. As for St. David, their victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-0.
Morenci lost to St. David on the road by a decisive 46-27 margin in their previous meeting back in November. Can Morenci avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
