While it was Coconino who put the first points on the board on Saturday, it was Sunrise Mountain who put up more. The Panthers fell just short of the Mustangs by a score of 27-24. The Panthers were up 14-0 in the first quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

When it comes to explaining why Coconino lost, don't look at Dylan Callado. Despite the final result, he rushed for 131 yards and three TDs on only 11 carries. With that strong performance, Callado is now averaging an impressive 102.8 rushing yards per game.

Sunrise Mountain's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Logan Russell led the charge by rushing for 57 yards and one touchdown. Another player making a difference was Tanner Austin, who picked up 93 receiving yards and one score.

Coconino now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Sunrise Mountain, their win bumped their record up to an identical 2-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Coconino will square off against Mingus at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers will be up against the Marauders' rather soft defense (which has allowed 42.6 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Sunrise Mountain, they will challenge Yuma Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Mustangs' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
