High school football: Knox playoff loss ends record-breaking season, career for Myles McLaughlin

Indiana sensation broke several rushing records but falls shy of Derrick Henry's career mark.

The record-breaking season and historic career of Myles McLaughlin came to an end Friday as Knox fell 35-0 to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers in Indiana's Class 3A semifinals.

McLaughlin had a chance to break the record for single-season points and move closer to the national career rushing record but was held out of the end zone for the first time since the fourth game of his sophomore season.

With 372 yards last week in a 28-21 win over Angola, McLaughlin broke the single-season records for both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. On Friday, Bishop Luers held McLaughlin to just 78 yards on the night, the first time he had been held to under 100 in 38 games.

None of that takes away from the historic season McLaughlin put together.

As Knox's workhorse all season, McLaughlin ran for national single-season records of 4,846 yards and 71 touchdowns from the quarterback position. He became just the fifth player ever with more than 11,000 career rushing yards and broke state records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and carries (486).

McLaughlin ran for over 300 yards 10 times during his senior year and over 400 yards five times. He finished his career third on the national career rushing list with 11,839 yards, putting him 224 behind Kelvin Taylor of Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.) and 285 behind current Baltimore Ravens star Derrick Henry, who posted 12,124 yards at Yulee (Fla.) from 2009–12.

Entering his senior season, McLaughlin was without a college offer but has picked up six from Division I programs this fall, including Ball State and Murray State.
