Football Preview: Mt. Zion Eagles vs. Pike County Pirates

After four games on the road, Mt. Zion is heading back home. They will welcome the Pike County Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Mt. Zion's defense heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They claimed a resounding 34-0 victory over Baconton Charter on the road.

Mt. Zion got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Xavier Buckner out in front who picked up 163 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Buckner torched the secondary when he pulled down a catch that went for 74 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Knox Israel, who threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns on only 17 passes.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Mt. Zion was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 218 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2023.

Mt. Zion's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged two passes before it was all said and done. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Corey Hutter.

Meanwhile, Pike County earned a 28-16 victory over Greenville last Friday.

Bryce Sammons continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 102 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries, while also throwing for 141 yards and a touchdown on only 11 passes.

Pike County wouldn't let Greenville keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Pike County can thank Johnson Anderson and Cj Parks for forcing both of them.

Mt. Zion now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Pike County, their win bumped their record up to 3-1.
