Basketball Game Preview: West Grand Mustangs vs. Soroco Rams

The West Grand Mustangs are taking a road trip to challenge the Soroco Rams at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.

West Grand will head into Saturday's match out to bounce back: they won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Saturday. They took a blow against De Beque, falling 79-43. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 334th, while the Dragons are ranked 164th).

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Sanjay Geffers, who posted 20 points. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Stran Lechman, who earned ten points.

Meanwhile, Soroco played a tough game on Saturday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were beaten by Vail Christian 69-40. The Rams have struggled against the Saints recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

Like West Grand, Soroco lost despite seeing results from several players. Brayden Dudley led the charge by putting up 18 points along with five rebounds and five steals. That was a full 45% of Soroco's points, marking the third time in a row he's put up more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Joseph Cordova, who went 5 of 11 en route to 14 points.

Soroco's defeat dropped their record down to 1-12. As for West Grand, their loss dropped their record down to 3-13.

West Grand barely slipped by Soroco in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, winning 31-30. The rematch might be a little tougher for West Grand since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
