Softball Preview: Mitchell Mustangs vs. Springstead Eagles

Mitchell has won six straight games at home, while Springstead has won six straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Wednesday. The Mustangs will welcome the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Mitchell 3.4, Springstead 1.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Mitchell was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last contest, but they sure didn't let that happen against Sunlake on Tuesday. The Mustangs blew past the Seahawks 14-2. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by six runs or more this season.

Madyson Whitaker made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits (and only one walk). Whitaker was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs, and one stolen base. Those two triples gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on MacKenzie Tucker, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Savannah Toukatly, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI, and one double.

Mitchell was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .412. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sunlake only posted a batting average of .185.

Meanwhile, Springstead won against Academy of the Holy Names last Tuesday with four runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Eagles didn't even let Citrus on the board, marking the Eagles' second-straight 4-0 shutout.

Like Mitchell, Springstead also got a great game from a two-way player: Alivia Miller. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. Miller has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 13 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

Miller wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sophia Whitacre, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double.

Mitchell's victory bumped their record up to 15-7. As for Springstead, their win bumped their record up to 13-1.

Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Mitchell hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Springstead struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.

Mitchell got the 'W' when the teams last played back in April of 2025 against Springstead by a conclusive 11-5 score. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
