Football Recap: Ty Benton's Big Game Can't Quite Lead South Putnam over Northview

If South Putnam was riding high fresh off their 69-13 takedown of West Vigo last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Eagles took a hard 48-33 fall against the Northview Knights on Friday. The loss continues a trend for the Eagles in their meetings with the Knights: they've now lost six in a row.

South Putnam's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ty Benton, who rushed for 219 yards and one score while picking up 7.1 yards per carry, and also caught one TD. Benton's rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 182 rushing yards. Drew Cline was another key passer, throwing for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Colton Bath was his usual excellent self, rushing for 255 yards and four scores on only 13 carries, while also throwing for 105 yards and one TD for Northview. Those four rushing touchdowns gave Bath a new career-high. Bryer McCluskey got in on the action too, returning a kick for a touchdown.

South Putnam's loss dropped their record down to 5-2. As for Northview, their record now sits at 6-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. South Putnam will host Owen Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 933 yards in their previous games. As for Northview, they will welcome Edgewood at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs' defense has only allowed 11.7 points per game this season, so the Knights' offense will have their work cut out for them.
