Basketball Recap: Mount Vernon Starts Season with Loss at Home

Mount Vernon unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They lost 59-33 to the Pinnacle Panthers on Thursday. Sadly, the defeat continues a streak the team started last season, making it four in a row.

Mount Vernon lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Hovhannes Mikayelyan, who posted 14 points and six boards. Mustafa Jalili was another key player, putting up eight points and eight rebounds.

Pinnacle's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Bryson Shumway, who scored 12 points in addition to five boards and three steals. Those 12 points gave Shumway a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Dominick Vigil, who put up ten points along with eight rebounds and five assists.

Pinnacle has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.

Mount Vernon didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 60-49 loss against Freedom Prep Academy on the 21st. As for Pinnacle, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 55-47 win against Merit Preparatory Academy on the 21st.
