Basketball Recap: Burke Comes Up Short

If Burke was feeling good fresh off their 75-55 takedown of Columbus last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Burke Bulldogs were outmatched by the Papillion-LaVista Monarchs and fell 74-47. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bulldogs of the 70-53 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January of 2024.

Despite the loss, Burke still got an impressive performance from Michael White, who posted 12 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jay Svoboda, who put up eight points.

Papillion-LaVista was led to victory by DeMarcus McCarty and Bryce Vigness. McCarty went 6-for-7 en route to 19 points along with six boards and three steals, while Vigness dropped a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Those 11 boards gave Vigness a new career-high. Cedric Williams was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Burke dropped their record down to 8-13 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Papillion-LaVista, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-10 record this season.

Burke wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, an 81-71 victory against Norfolk on the 15th. As for Papillion-LaVista, they will be playing at home against Buena Vista at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Papillion-LaVista knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 11 contests -- so hopefully Buena Vista likes a good challenge.
