Washington, Madison and Winner all return as state champs, but don't sleep on Brandon Valley or Tea in the South Dakota football #MaxPrepsFab5.

MaxPreps 2017 South Dakota Preseason Football Fab 5, presented by the Army National Guard

1. Washington (Sioux Falls)
2016 record: 12-0
Head coach: Chad Stadem

The defending 11AAA state champions have a great core returning for 2017.

The Warriors will be stout up front led by rising senior center Will Farniok. The 6-foot-3, 250 pound Nebraska commit was All-State last season and will lead a line that includes Trevor Burkhart, Ryan Vargas and Malik Paulson.

Rising junior running back Tupak Kpeayeh, an All-State pick past season, will benefit from the beef up front. Kpeayeh ran for 231 yards and three touchdowns in the state title game last season.

2. Madison
2016 record: 11-1
Head coach: Max Hodgen

The 11A champions last season look to repeat with incoming senior quarterback Josh Giles leading the offense.
Giles threw for 2,627 yards and 39 touchdowns last year in the Bulldogs' perfect season.

Rising senior Jadon Janke ran for 541 yards and nine touchdowns, while adding 451 yards receiving and five scores. Jaxon Janke caught 34 passes for 758 receiving and 11 TDs.

Jadon Janke also had 93 tackles from his linebacker spot, while defensive lineman Brad Hoff added 69 tackles.

3. Brandon Valley (Brandon)
2016 record: 9-4
Head coach: Chad Garrow



The Lynx were runner-up to 11AAA champion Washington last season and gained a ton of experience.

Rising sophomore quarterback Ty McCann returns after a fruitful freshman season.

Linebacker Alex Miller, junior running backs Tyler Small and Braydon Carmody, and junior fullback Will Brown all return.

All-State offensive lineman Max Howard returns in addition to fellow All-State pick Cade Terveer on the defensive line.

4. Winner
2016 record: 12-0
Head coach: Dan Aaker



The 11B champions look to repeat with rising junior Brandon Volmer at quarterback. He'll be joined by senior running back Ty Bolton.

Junior lineman Colton Schroeder provides some size up front, while Jerry Long Crow should be stout at outside linebacker and AJ Roubideaux will anchor the defensive line.

5. Tea
2016 record: 12-2
Head coach: Craig Clayberg

The Titans fell in last season's 11A finals, but return a good core of the team that reached the finals.

Tea will be led by junior quarterback Hunter West, who will have junior wideouts Cade Clayberg and Isaac Price as targets downfield. Fellow junior running backs Carter Slykhuis and Nathan Ochsner will be joined in the backfield by sophomore fullback Luke Elkins, who also will fill the middle linebacker spot.



Up front, the lines will be controlled by seniors Hunter Otten and Blake Ensz and juniors Jalon Wipf and Kaleb Joffer.
