Baseball Game Preview: Morro Bay Pirates vs. Orcutt Academy Spartans

For the second straight game, Morro Bay will face off against Orcutt Academy. The Pirates will challenge the Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Morro Bay is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.

Morro Bay was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last contest, but they sure didn't let that happen against Orcutt Academy on Tuesday. The Pirates' pitchers stepped up to hand the Spartans a 14-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won seven matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.

Cruz Wilkinson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Wilkinson wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Frankie Ainley, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Another was Quentin Crotts, who scored three runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.

Morro Bay always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Orcutt Academy only posted an OBP of .235.

Morro Bay's record is now 12-4. As for Orcutt Academy, their loss was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-9.

Morro Bay's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's game. The Pirates have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game.
