Baseball Game Preview: South Shore Cardinals vs. Mellen Granite Diggers

South Shore is 1-7 against Mellen since May of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Cardinals will take on the Granite Diggers at 4:30 p.m. South Shore is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.

South Shore is headed into Thursday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Monday. They took a 9-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of Mellen.

Hayden Meritz put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off two hits. Meritz was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Kaden Bryant was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. Another player making a difference was Nathaniel Spuhler, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

The win (which was Mellen's sixth in a row) raised their record to 7-2. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for South Shore, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-6.
