Baseball Recap: Starkville Wins High-Profile Contest Against Clinton

On Wednesday, Starkville faced Clinton in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Starkville Yellowjackets narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Clinton Arrows 6-5. The Yellowjackets have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Arrows, too.

Jonas Coleman made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Torian Knox, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.

The victory was the third in a row for Starkville, bringing their record for this year to 6-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Clinton, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 7-2.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Starkville beat Clinton by a score of 6-3 on Friday.
