Mater Dei hopes to extend its state lead of 10 championships with win over Bishop O'Dowd in the Open Division; Four first-time teams make it to the final weekend.

Some veteran programs — Mater Dei, Bishop O'Dowd, St. Joseph Notre Dame and Bishop Montgomery — join four boys basketball newcomers to the CIF State Championships Friday and Saturday at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

The south owns a 98-48 edge over the north since the inception of the games in 1981.
