Basketball Recap: Mayfield Triumphs

Mayfield lost to Riverside back in January, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Friday. The Mayfield Wildcats escaped with a win against the Riverside Beavers by the margin of a single free throw, 57-56. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Wildcats.

Leading Mayfield to victory were Andre Avery and Angelo Newman. Avery dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards, while Newman went 8 for 16 on his way to 19 points and five rebounds. Those ten boards gave Avery a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Aarav Ganore, who went 5 of 7 en route to 10 points.

Riverside's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Colin Durkin, who went 8 for 18 on his way to 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Drew Brown, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine rebounds.

Mayfield is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 6-10 record this season. As for Riverside, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-5.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mayfield will take on South at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in South's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last three games. As for Riverside, they will square off against Kenston at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Riverside is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 67.3 points per game this season.
