Softball Recap: Covington Victorious

Covington took a 12-run defeat the last time they faced off against Ripley, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Chargers narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Tigers 6-4. While the Chargers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-27), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Bella Crook made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Those six strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lyv Cromwell, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Abbi Lanley was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.

Covington's win bumped their record up to 7-5. As for Ripley, they dropped their record down to 6-7-1 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Covington will head out to challenge Bartlett at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Chargers are facing the Panthers at the right time seeing as the Panthers are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Ripley, they will welcome Milan at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Bulldogs will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.
