Basketball Recap: Countryside Comes Up Short

If Countryside was feeling good fresh off their 57-14 takedown of Tarpon Springs last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Countryside Cougars took a 39-27 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sunlake Seahawks on Friday. The matchup marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Despite the loss, Countryside still got an impressive performance from Julia Smith, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine boards. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Wright, who posted seven points.

Sunlake got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Cherity Powells out in front who put up 11 points in addition to six boards and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaycie Hyde, who had six points along with six assists and six boards.

Countryside dropped their record down to 8-3 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Sunlake, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 6-3.

Countryside and Sunlake should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings. Countryside (ranked 141st) will meet Parrish Community (ranked 389th) at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Similarly, Sunlake (ranked 133rd) will meet Merritt Island Christian (ranked 423rd) at 5:00 p.m. on December 28th.
