Basketball Recap: Janelle Gyampo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead St. Mary's over Cary Academy

St. Mary lost against Cary Academy back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The St. Mary's Saints fell 52-42 to the Cary Academy Chargers. The Saints have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

St. Mary's lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Janelle Gyampo, who dropped a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. She has been hot, having posted ten or more boards the last five times she's played. Kate Chamblee was another key player, putting up ten points.

Even though they lost, St. Mary's was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Cary Academy got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Gabrielle Young out in front who went 6 for 11 from beyond the arc to rack up 27 points and seven rebounds. That makes it six consecutive games in which Young has scored at least a third of Cary Academy's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Avni Lutz, who posted 13 points along with seven boards and five assists.

St. Mary's record now sits at 12-9. As for Cary Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 10-11.

St. Mary's does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Cary Academy, they will challenge Charlotte Latin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
