Pius X is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Thursday. They will be playing at home against the Wahoo/Bishop Neumann Warriors at 6:30 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Wahoo/Bishop Neumann will be up against a hot Pius X team: the squad just extended their winning streak to four. The Thunderbolts were the clear victors by an 11-4 margin over Fremont on Tuesday. The Thunderbolts not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 28th (when they won 23-10).
Lucas Newton made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Newton was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Jake Bugbee was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Dax Woita, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Pius X always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They are 4-2 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last game, Wahoo/Bishop Neumann made sure to put some runs up on the board against Platteview on Monday. The Warriors put the hurt on the Trojans with a sharp 13-1 win. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Warriors' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Cash Parson looked comfortable as he pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Isiah Nagle and Kaden Christen did most of the damage at the plate: Nagle went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs, while Christen went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Nagle is becoming a predictor of Wahoo/Bishop Neumann's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 5-1 (and 6-10 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Jase Kaminski, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Pius X's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-12. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for Wahoo/Bishop Neumann, the victory got them back to even at 11-11.
