Basketball Recap: Red Rock Central Comes Up Short

Red Rock Central played a tough game on Thursday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 94-49 loss at the hands of the Springfield Tigers. While losing is never fun, the Falcons can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Minnesota basketball rankings (they are ranked 362nd, while the Tigers are ranked 82nd).

Despite the loss, Red Rock Central still got an impressive performance from Abe Stavnes, who went 9 for 14 on his way to 21 points. The dominant performance gave Stavnes a new career-high in points. Henry Stavnes was another key player, putting up 12 points and five assists.

Even though they lost, Red Rock Central was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Leading Springfield to victory were Brecken Heiling and Bryan Buerkle. Heiling went 10 of 15 on his way to 24 points, while Buerkle almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine rebounds. The match was Buerkle's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Parker Kuehn, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 13 points and five rebounds.

Red Rock Central's defeat was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Springfield, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 6-1.

Red Rock Central won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Mountain Lake/Comfrey at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Springfield, they also won't have to wait long for more action: they'll take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Springfield is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 83.7 points per game this season.
