Baseball Recap: Monday's Win Is Cumberland Gap's Fourth in Last Five Outings

After only one run in their last game, Cumberland Gap made sure to put some runs up on the board against Middlesboro on Monday. The Cumberland Gap Panthers came out on top against the Middlesboro Yellowjackets by a score of 13-8. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Panthers also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2024.

Tate Murphy made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He is becoming a predictor of Cumberland Gap's success: when he allows at most three hits the team is undefeated (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Murphy was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That home run was his first of the season.

Murphy wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Hudson Harris, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. That home run marked the first that Harris launched this season. Kole Carter was another, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Cumberland Gap kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Cumberland Gap has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. Middlesboro is on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Cumberland Gap Panthers challenge Bell County Bobcats at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Middlesboro, they are taking a road trip to take on Barbourville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
