Kearny is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Mar Vista a three-game streak of away losses. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Tuesday. The Kearny Komets will take on the Mar Vista Mariners in a tournament on Tuesday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Kearny will bounce into Tuesday's game after beating Mount Miguel, who they had gone 0-7 against in their seven prior meetings. Kearny had just enough and edged out Mount Miguel 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Komets have posted since May 17, 2024.
Ansel Eaton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits.

Nicolas Hembera
03/22/25 @ Mount Miguel | 3 |
04/10/24 @ Hoover | 2 |
03/27/24 vs Valley Center | 2 |
03/12/24 @ El Cajon Valley | 2 |
03/01/24 @ Victory Christian Academy | 2 |
At the plate, DJ Martinez and Nicolas Hembera did most of the damage at the plate: Martinez scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-2, while Hembera scored a run and stole three bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances. Those three stolen bases gave Hembera a new career-high.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mar Vista). Everything went their way against Hoover on Saturday as Mar Vista made off with an 18-1 win. The Mariners have beaten the Cardinals the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Cardinals has come to flipping the script.
Peter Thomas and Noah Esqueda made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Thomas pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Esqueda tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Mar Vista is 2-1 when Thomas allowstwo or fewer hits, but 3-4 otherwise. At the plate, Thomas scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances, while Esqueda scored two runs while going 1-for-2. Thomas also put up a triple, which was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Mar Vista let Daniel Snow and Bryan Espinoza run wild. Snow scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances, while Espinoza scored two runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Tillman, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Mar Vista was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .406. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive contests.
Kearny's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-5. As for Mar Vista, the win got them back to even at 5-5.
