Softball Game Preview: Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies vs. University Trojans

The Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies are taking a road trip to take on the University Trojans at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Godinez Fundamental will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.

Godinez Fundamental took a loss when they played away from home last Monday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They were the clear victor by a 13-3 margin over Century. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Grizzlies as it put an end to their seven-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Clarissa Rubio was a standout: she scored two runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Priscilla Tlilayatzi, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, University got themselves on the board against Samueli Academy on Wednesday, but Samueli Academy never followed suit. They blew past the Firewolves 25-0. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by nine runs or more this season.

Maiko Shiraiwa made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sophia Weinberg, who scored five runs and stole a base while getting on base in all six of her plate appearances. Jessica Hu was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.

University kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 23 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Godinez Fundamental's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for University, their record is now 4-1.
