Preview: Peru Nighthawks vs. Beekmantown Eagles
The Peru Nighthawks will take on the Beekmantown Eagles at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Peru sitting on three straight victories and Beekmantown on four.
Peru put the finishing touches on their fourth blowout victory of the season two weeks ago. They claimed a resounding 47-14 victory over Saranac Lake at home. Given Peru's advantage in MaxPreps' New York football rankings (they are ranked 184th, while Saranac Lake is ranked 515th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sawyer Schlitt was his usual excellent self, rushing for 92 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries. Schlitt is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he's now punched in two or more in the last three games he's played. Peru also got help from landen duprey who showed off his sure hands for 130 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Beekmantown can now show off four landslide victories after their most recent matchup on Friday. They took their match at home with ease, bagging a 44-12 win over Plattsburgh. Beekmantown pushed the score to 38-12 by the end of the third, a deficit Plattsburgh had little chance of recovering from.
Among those leading the charge was Parker Broughton, who rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. Broughton was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 50 yards.
Peru's win was their fourth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 6-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-8 Plattsburgh and 1-7 Saranac Lake (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 21.5% over those games). As for Beekmantown, their victory bumped their record up to 6-3.
Peru strolled past Beekmantown in their previous meeting back in September by a score of 33-17. Will Peru repeat their success, or does Beekmantown have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
