Baseball Game Preview: Dirigo Cougars vs. Nokomis Warriors

The Dirigo Cougars are taking a road trip to square off against the Nokomis Warriors at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Mount Abram hit Dirigo with a seven-run first inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Cougars came up short against the Roadrunners, falling 9-2. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Dirigo saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Trevor Crosby, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base. Crosby is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

Meanwhile, Nokomis posted their closest win since May 24, 2024 on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Gardiner 8-6. The Warriors haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

The team relied heavily on Jacob Bubar, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Jeff Carr also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Nokomis was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Nokomis' record is now 2-4. As for Dirigo, their loss dropped their record down to 4-4.

Nokomis' hitters will have their work cut out for them on Saturday. Dirigo has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Nokomis, though, as they've been averaging only 3.3 strikeouts. Will Dirigo keep running through batters, or will the Warriors buck the trend?

Dirigo suffered a grim 12-0 defeat to Nokomis when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
