Football Recap: Cruz Mcmullens' Big Game Can't Quite Lead University over Garden Grove

University had lost three straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-3 to make it four. They lost 35-14 to the Garden Grove Argonauts. The matchup was a 7-7 toss-up at halftime, but the Trojans couldn't quite close it out.

University's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cruz McMullens, who picked up 117 receiving yards and one touchdown. McMullens was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 69 yards.

Garden Grove's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. They not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since August 23, 2024 (when they won 42-0).

Quentin Pacelli continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 380 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 9.5 yards per carry. His rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his seventh straight game with at least 167 rushing yards dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Calvin Keovphan, who threw for 130 yards and three TDs while completing 78.6% of his passes.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. University will take on Glenn at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Garden Grove, they will square off against Rancho Alamitos at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Vaqueros' defense has only allowed 14.2 points per game this season, so the Argonauts' offense will have their work cut out for them.
