Basketball Recap: State College Comes Up Short

State College lost against Cumberland Valley back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The State College Little Lions were beaten by the Cumberland Valley Eagles 64-35. While losing is never fun, the Little Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 172nd, while the Eagles are ranked ninth).

When it comes to explaining why State College lost, don't look at Reed Melvin. Despite the final result, he posted 13 points. That was a full 37.1% of State College's points, marking the third time in a row he's scored more than a third of the team's points. Owen Mayville also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Nolan Buzalka was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 22 points and 16 boards for Cumberland Valley. The matchup was Buzalka's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Creston Austin, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds.

State College has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-10 record this season. As for Cumberland Valley, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-3.

State College didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 67-62 win against Central York on the 3rd. As for Cumberland Valley, they will face off against Central Dauphin East at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Cumberland Valley's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last four matchups.
