Softball Recap: Mt. Vernon Takes a Loss

Mt. Vernon fell victim to Belleville East and their airtight pitching crew on Wednesday. They took a 5-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lancers. The Rams haven't had much luck with the Lancers recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.

Danicah Tobin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on six hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

Mt. Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Belleville East, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mt. Vernon will square off against Marion at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Rams 3.2, the Wildcats 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Belleville East, they will take on Alton at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Redbirds will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
