Basketball Recap: Jamari Cottingham's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Basic over Valley

Basic was the 75-65 winner over Valley when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Basic Wolves took an 84-73 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Valley Vikings on Monday. The Wolves were down 65-45 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.

Several Wolves players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was JaMari Cottingham, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 12 rebounds. Cottingham's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Kenny Williams was another key player, putting up 24 points and five boards.

Even though they lost, Basic smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 21 consecutive games.

Basic has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-13 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.7 points per game. As for Valley, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 12-13.

Basic will head out on the road to square off against Bonanza at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Basic is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 63.1 points per game this season. As for Valley, they will welcome Green Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Green Valley also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 59.3 points per game.
