Baseball Recap: Trico's Winning Streak Snapped at Three Games

Trico dropped their record down to 7-12 on Tuesday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Benton Rangers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Pioneers of the 10-6 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2018.

As for Benton, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-17 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games.

For Benton's part, Hunter Irvin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up ten Ks. Irvin has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Grant Owens, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Benton is undefeated when Owens posts two or more runs, but 3-17 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Clay Gage, who went 1-for-2 with two runs.

Trico and Benton could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Pioneers (ranked 383rd) will meet Carterville (ranked 120th) at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Benton will square off against Marion at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank disadvantage (460 vs. 88).
