Mentor has gone 8-2 against Brunswick recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Cardinals will challenge the Blue Devils at 5:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Mentor comes in on 12 and Brunswick on seven.
On Friday, Mentor earned a 6-3 win over Riverside.
Maggie Haydu spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits.
At the plate, Maddie Menough was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, one triple, and two RBI. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Maddie Beam-Jones, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one triple.
Meanwhile, Brunswick sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 victory over Medina on Monday. That's two games straight that the Blue Devils have won by just one run.
Brunswick also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Gabby Diligente gave up four earned runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks. Diligente has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single walk in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Giovanna Diligente, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Elena Osowski was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs.
Brunswick's win was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-3. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mentor, their win bumped their record up to 18-7.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mentor hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. However, it's not like Brunswick struggles in that department as they've averaged .423. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mentor came out on top in a nail-biter against Brunswick in their previous meeting back in April, sneaking past 7-5. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
