League recap: Lewisburg stuns Clarksdale in upset

5A Region 1 recap October 22, 2013

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Lewisburg, who defeated 36th ranked Clarksdale, 44-40. Jake Harville threw for 301 yards and 6 touchdowns and ran for 41 yards during the win.

The Patriots scaled the state rankings by moving to 81 from 109 this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region 1. Lewisburg climbed the ranks as a result of besting the Wildcats 44-40.

Butch Veazey's team's dynamic duo of Harville and Tucker Wammack proved to be unstoppable against Clarksdale, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Colton Freeman helped Lewisburg's passing attack out by catching 8 balls for 79 yards.

Diamante Pounds was a force in the backfield as Saltillo defeated Center Hill.

Tiwan Jackson made the biggest impact on defense this week as Henry Johnson's team fell to the Patriots. He grabbed 1 sack.

Lake Cormorant's Bailey Walker and Ryan Golden led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-3 quarterback Walker has thrown for 2,158 yards this season, while Golden has 44 catches for 766 yards. The Tigers' Pounds leads the league in rushing yards with 1,477.

Kenzie Phillips of the Oxford is just 30 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Phillips has rushed for 970 yards on 104 carries so far this year.

At the moment, the Chargers are in first, while Clarksdale is in fourth.

Saltillo was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from fourth to second in the league. Pat Byrd's team vanquished the Mustangs 43-28 earlier in the week.
