The Mayfield Cardinals will challenge the Hickman County Falcons at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Mayfield has three straight victories, Hickman County has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Monday, Mayfield made easy work of Fulton County and carried off a 13-3 win. Considering the Cardinals have won three matchups by more than seven runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Landon Beggs spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 12 Ks. He has become a key player for Mayfield: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 1-2 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Kyler Simpson was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Tucker Dunn, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Mayfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .529. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Hickman County lost 13-3 to St. Mary on Tuesday. That's two games in a row now that the Falcons have lost by exactly ten runs.
Hickman County saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Witt Carter, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI. Those two RBI gave Carter a new career-high. Drew Cunningham also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
The victory got Mayfield back to even at 3-3. As for Hickman County, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-5.
Hickman County's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mayfield has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .441. It's a different story for Hickman County, though, as they've only averaged .341. Will they be able to contain Mayfield's hitters?
Mayfield might still be hurting after the 10-1 loss they got from Hickman County in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can Mayfield avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
