Baseball Recap: Covington Comes Up Short

Covington dropped their record down to 11-11 on Friday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Piqua Indians by a score of 1-0. The shutout was out of character for the Buccs seeing as the last time the team failed to score was back in April.

As for Piqua, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-13. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.5 runs across that stretch.

For Piqua's part, Jerry Anthony was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Anthony has become a key player for Piqua: the team is 4-2 when he allows at most two hits, but 8-11 otherwise. Anthony was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and one double. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Aiden Applegate tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

Anthony wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Owen Shawler, who went 1-for-3 with one triple.

Looking ahead, Covington will face off against Jackson Center at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Piqua, they will take on Miami East at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
