Baseball Recap: Waterloo Takes a Loss

Waterloo extended their losing streak to nine on Wednesday, dropping them down to 2-14. They lost 11-1 to the Newark Reds. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Reds this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-1 back in April.

As for Newark, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-9 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.9 runs over those games.

For Newark's part, Jayce Baker made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Those 14 strikeouts gave Baker a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Newark's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 5-2 (and 4-7 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Ricky Orlopp was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Keane Brady was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three runs.
