Football Recap: Ty Sorrells' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Commerce over Athens Academy + How To Watch

Commerce extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to six on Friday, dropping them down to 0-5. They lost 49-28 to the Athens Academy Spartans. The Tigers were not able to make up for their loss to the Spartans from their previous meeting back in September of 2024.

Commerce's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ty Sorrells, who picked up 179 receiving yards and three TDs. The Tigers also got help from Essian Locklear, who showed off his sure hands for 100 receiving yards.

As for Athens Academy, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 4-1. Their offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

A big part of Athens Academy's win came down to the chemistry between Chap Chapman and his top target Keyon Standifer. Chapman threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 14.6 yards per attempt while Standifer picked up 144 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Standifer really caught the secondary sleeping when he pulled down a catch that went for 73 yards.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Commerce is set to face off against their familiar foe Elbert County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Athens Academy will take on rival Oglethorpe County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
