Baseball Recap: Maxwell Has No Trouble Against Portola

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Maxwell had no problem doing just that on Friday. They put the hurt on the Portola Tigers with a sharp 7-0 win. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matchups by six runs or more this season.

Massey Baker was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Baker was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Baker wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Edgar Izquierdo, who went 2-for-3 with two runs. That's the most hits Izquierdo has posted since back in April. Another was Luke Pearson, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Maxwell has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That somehow still isn't as good as their 19-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Portola, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 13 of their last 16 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-16 record this season.

Maxwell will face off against Biggs at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Panthers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wolverines have averaged an impressive 8.7 runs per game this season. Portola does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
