Baseball Game Preview: El Cerrito Gauchos vs. Piedmont Highlanders

The El Cerrito Gauchos will head out to take on the Piedmont Highlanders at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Neither of those teams managed to put together many runs in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

Monday just wasn't the day for El Cerrito's offense. They fell just short of Antioch by a score of 2-0 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Gauchos have suffered since April 2, 2024.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Piedmont, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They had just enough and edged out Miramonte 1-0.

Not much got past Massimo Mittone, who gave up just three hits to keep Miramonte off the board. Mittone has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Diego Delventhal, who scored a run while going 3-for-3. What's more, he posted two doubles, the most he's had since back in March of 2024.

This is the second loss in a row for El Cerrito and nudges their season record down to 4-3. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Piedmont, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.

El Cerrito took their victory against Piedmont when the teams last played back in April of 2021 by a conclusive 10-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for El Cerrito since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
