Recap: Westover Patriots vs. Cairo Syrupmakers
The Westover Patriots had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.3 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They managed a 52-46 win over Cairo. That's another feather in the cap for Westover, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Traveion Wheeler was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. He has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Anthony Milton, who scored 12 points.
Cairo's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amari Powell, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. Powell has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Keshen Spence, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and six assists.
Westover's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-7. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.7 points per game. As for Cairo, their loss dropped their record down to 8-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Westover won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Colquitt County at 6:00 p.m. on January 13th. Colquitt County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Georgia Rankings (they are ranked 406th, while Westover is ranked 144th). Cairo will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Thomas County Central at 7:30 p.m. on January 16th.
