Basketball Recap: Wootton Takes a Loss

After flying high against Walter Johnson on Thursday, Wootton came back down to earth. The Wootton Patriots had to suffer through a 80-52 loss at the hands of the Whitman Vikings. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 175th, while the Vikings are ranked 44th).

Wootton's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brian Ngouzo, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 boards. Ngouzo has become a key player for Wootton: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least eight boards, but 1-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Sammy Alexandre, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 17 points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Wootton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 16 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Whitman to victory, but perhaps none more so than Max Williams, who went 10 of 13 on his way to 22 points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Titian DeRosa, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 12 points and seven assists.

Wootton's loss dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Whitman, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wootton will host Seneca Valley at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Wootton is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58.6 points per game this season. As for Whitman, they will challenge Bethesda-Chevy Chase at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Bethesda-Chevy Chase will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Whitman surely won't give up without a fight.
