Baseball Recap: Deer Valley Comes Up Short

Deer Valley extended their losing streak to 11 on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 0-11 in the process. They lost 8-1 to the Antioch Panthers. That's two games in a row now that the Wolverines have lost by exactly seven runs.

Mark McBurney spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and six unearned) runs on eight hits.

As for Antioch, their win ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-12. They not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 6th (when they won 9-0).

On Antioch's side, Kamari Davis was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave Davis a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That double marked the first that he has hit this season.

In other pitching news, Jared Flores looked comfortable as he pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (two).

Davis wasn't the only one making solid contact as eight players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Daniel Mutter, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. Mutter has become a key player for Antioch: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 5-11 otherwise.

While Deer Valley had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
