Basketball Recap: Johann Omae's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Otay Ranch over Mar Vista

On Friday, the Otay Ranch Mustangs came up short against the Mar Vista Mariners and fell 68-61. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Otay Ranch lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Johann Omae, who posted 15 points in addition to seven boards and five assists. What's more, Omae also racked up four steals, the most he's had since back in December of 2024. Ace Arciaga was another key player, putting up 13 points.

Mar Vista got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jahaziel Catano out in front who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 16 rebounds. Catano's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Omar Krenbeh, who went 10 of 20 on his way to 25 points and eight boards.

Otay Ranch's loss dropped their record down to 6-14. As for Mar Vista, they now have a winning record of 10-9.

Otay Ranch has already played their next contest, a 78-28 defeat against Mission Hills on the 18th. As for Mar Vista, they will challenge Southwest SD at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Southwest SD is on a five-game streak of home wins, Mar Vista a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
