Nelson, Hoffman, Depaoli, Dews, Williams named division players of the year.
It was
only fitting that the top player from each of the state's top two teams
met in a showdown for the California Division I Player of the Year honor.
And just as it was on the court a little over a
month ago, Granite Bay's 5-foot-10 setter Taylor Nelson edged Los Alamitos
6-2 front line standout Crissy Jones. Nelson is California's 2013 MaxPreps D-I
Player of the Year.
Nelson totaled 46 assists, five kills, three digs and a block in the 3-1 title-clinching victory against Jones and Los Alamitos in the state championship match at Santiago Canyon College.
Both Nelson and Jones have been receiving honors on a weekly basis since Granite Bay defeated Los Alamitos Dec. 7.
Each has league top player honors and top section player recognition
and have also been named the top player on most media outlets' top player
squads.
Taylor, who will play collegiately at Cal Poly, was also California's Gatorade State Player of the Year after leading
Granite Bay to a 45-0 season.
Statically, each had huge seasons - Jones 607 kills and 340 digs and Nelson had 996 assists and 196 kills.
Jones, who has signed to play at Washington, led Los
Alamitos to a 35-6 record and was an Under Armour All-American first
team selection.
Division I

PLAYER OF THE YEAR – S - Taylor Nelson - Granite Bay, 5-10 Senior
A
MaxPreps All-American and the Sacramento's Bee's Player of the Year,
Nelson led Granite Bay to the state title. She totaled 996 assists
and 192 kills as Granite Bay finished 45-0 and ranked No. 3 in the
nation. Nelson was also named the state's Gatorade POY winner. She has
signed with Cal Poly.
OH - Frankie Shebby - Mater Dei (Santa Ana), 6-0 Senior

Shebby
led Mater Dei (33-8) to the state quarterfinals. She was MVP of the
prestigious California Challenge. With Shebby in the lineup, the
Monarchs were 27-4. Shebby, who is headed to Oregon, averaged 4.2 kills
per set and had a kill percentage of .461. She was a MaxPreps
All-American.
OH - Crissy Jones - Los Alamitos, 6-2 SeniorJones led Los Alamitos to the state finals. She recorded 607 kills, 61 blocks, 340 digs and 26 aces. Jones, who will attend Washington, was a MaxPreps All-American. She was also the Orange County Register's Player of the Year, CIF Southern Section Player of the Year and an Under Armour All-American first teamer.
OH - Katherine Claybaugh - San Ramon Valley (Danville), 5-10 SophomoreClaybaugh had an outstanding sophomore year with 646 kills and 358 digs in leading the team to a 33-4 season. She was named the East Bay Athletic League's MVP and led the Wolves to a North Coast Section D-I title. Claybaugh was the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year and was named Bay Area News Group's Player of the Year.
OH - Reily Buechler - Torrey Pines (San Diego), 6-1 SeniorBuechler led Torrey Pines to a 33-4 season as she recorded 345 kills, 171 digs, 23 blocks and 314 serve receptions. She led Torrey Pines to the San Diego Section Open Division championship and will play at UCLA next year. She was also a MaxPreps All-American, Under Armour All-American and was the San Diego Union-Tribune's Player of the Year.
OH - Haley DeSales - La Salle (Pasadena), 6-0 JuniorThe Pasadena Star Player of the Year, DeSales led La Salle to a 32-6 season with 634 kills, 55 aces, 89 blocks and 438 digs. She was the area's top volleyball player for the second year in a row.
OH - Cadie Bates - Great Oak (Temecula), 6-1 SeniorBates, who will play at Duke, was the Southwestern League MVP and led the Wolfpack to the Southern Section semifinals. She was named to the All-Southern Section team.
OH - Maddy Deters - Granite Bay, 6-0 SeniorDeters had a team-high 440 kills, 57 aces and 214 digs as Granite Bay finished No. 3 nationally and won the California Division I title. She will play collegiately at Concordia University of Irvine. She was a MaxPreps All-American and a Sacramento Bee All-Metro pick.
OH - Hayley Hodson - Corona del Mar (Newport Beach), 6-2 JuniorThe All-Southern Section player had 407 kills for a 25-7 team.
OH - Becca Raffel - Palo Alto, 6-0 SeniorWith Raffel supplying offense and defense, Palo Alto went deep in the state playoffs, losing to eventual champion Granite Bay. Raffel had 361 digs, 39 aces, 508 kills and 31 blocks. She was named to the Palo-Alto Times all-area volleyball team.
OH - Lexi Sun - Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach), 6-2 FreshmanIn 68 sets, Sun had 390 kills, 25 aces (103 service points), 52 blocks (42 solo) and 164 digs. She was a member of Team USA in the inaugural FIVB Women's Under-23 World Championships and missed part of Santa Fe Christian's season. She was a MaxPreps Freshman All-American and named to the San Diego Union-Tribune All-Area team.
OH - Taylor Wheatley - Orange Lutheran, 6-0 Senior

Wheatley, who is headed to USC, helped the Lancers win the Trinity League title and advance to the CIF-SS Division 1AA semifinals. She recorded 401 kills, 41 aces, 212 digs and finished second on the team in blocks. She was named to the all-Southern Section team.
MB - Brittany Abercrombie - La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad), 6-3 Senior Abercrombie, who led La Costa Canyon to a 25-win season with 335 kills, 46 aces, 40 blocks, and 178 digs, was a repeat on the San Diego Union-Tribune All-Area team and a MaxPreps All-American. She will play at USC.
MB - Lindsey Vander Weide - Pitman (Turlock), 6-3 JuniorVander Weide led the Pride to a 33-5 season, averaging five kills per set. She also had 51 blocks, 169 serve receptions and 99 digs.
S - Ali Koumelis - St. Francis (Sacramento), 5-9 SeniorKoumelis, who has committed to the University of Portland, led the Troubadours with 969 assists and was the vocal leader for St. Francis as it advanced to the NorCal D-I title match. She was a Sacramento Bee All-Metro selection.
S - Norene Losia - Redondo Union (Redondo Beach), 5-10 SophomoreNamed the Torrance Daily Breeze's Player of the Year, Losia led Redondo to a 31-6 campaign and the CIF Division 1AA quarterfinals. She averaged 11.6 assists in 55 sets.
DS/S - Jewls (Alyssa) Tavera - La Salle (Pasadena), 5-7 Junior

Tavera, who was named to the All-Southern Section team, totaled 1,264 assists and added 309 digs as La Salle won 32 matches
A-A - Zana Muno - Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), 5-10 JuniorMuno, who was named the Los Angeles Daily News' Player of the Year, did a lot of everything for Notre Dame. She had 217 kills, 222 digs, 206 assists and 37 blocks in earning Mission League and Division I-A first-team honors.
A-A - Caroline Knop - La Salle (Pasadena), 5-11 Senior The Michigan-bound senior moved from libero to her more natural outside hitter position and did not miss a beat. The Lancers' most visual team leader had 381 kills, 26 aces and hit a team-high 96.1 percent of her serves. She still led the Lancers in digs, averaging 16.0 per match. She was a MaxPreps All-American.
A-A - Kelly Claes - El Dorado (Placentia), 6-2 Senior Claes is one of the more versatile players in the state. She had a .420 hitting percentage (398 kills), 207 assists, 188 digs, 47 aces and 30 blocks. Last year, she was first-team All-County at opposite. She has signed with USC.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR – OH Chanel Hoffman, Santiago (Corona), 6-0 SeniorHoffman, a MaxPreps All-American, was all-CIF Southern Section and HSG Game Time Player of the Year as she led Santiago to a 40-1 season and a state runner-up trophy. She averaged 4.3 kills and added 58 aces, 246 digs, 39 blocks and only 21 service errors in 349 attempts. She's the Big VIII's Player of the Year as a junior and senior. She will play for UC Santa Barbara.
OH - Lauren Nicholson - Upland, 5-9 SeniorNicholson averaged a section best 6.3 kills (475, 76 sets), and added 23 aces, and 291 digs. She was named All-Baseline for three years and has signed with Portland State.
OH - Kylee Wolfe - Whittier Christian (La Habra), 6-0 SeniorWolfe, who helped lead Whittier Christian to the CIF-SS Division 2A title, was named the CIF Southern Section 2A Player of the Year, as well as Whittier Daily News Player of Year. She had 299 kills, a .359 hitting percentage and recorded 41 kills in the final two state playoff matches.
OH - Deanna Blaine - Whittier Christian (La Habra), 5-10 Senior

Blaine teamed with Wolfe for a great one-two punch as Whittier Christian won the 2A section title. She had 418 kills, 65 aces, 43 blocks, 267 digs and 594 serve receptions as Whittier went 33-7.
OH - Clare Powers - Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), 6-3 SeniorDespite injuries, Powers led Mitty to the state's D-II title with 408 kills, 33 blocks, 304 digs, 505 serve receptions and was a 96 percent server. She will attend St. Mary's. She was a MaxPreps All-American.
OH - Christine Alftin - Woodside, 6-0 SeniorThe Daily Journal's Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division finished the season with 515 kills, averaging 5.7 per set for a team that went 13-1 in division play to win the championship by two games over Menlo-Atherton and Carlmont.
OH - Marisa Rojo - Los Altos (Hacienda Heights), 5-10 SeniorRojo did a lot of everything for the Hacienda League champion Conquerors, earning the league co-MVP award after being named to the first team the two previous years. The Conquerors finished 11-1 in league play behind Rojo, who finished with a team-best 310 kills, 34 blocks, 228 digs and 33 aces. She will play at San Francisco State.
OH - Lexi Resch - Arcadia, 5-11 Junior Resch was named all-Southern Section and to the Pasadena Star All-Area team.
OH - Carmen Annevelink - Los Altos, 6-2 JuniorThe co-MVP in the SCVAL De Anza Division, Annevelink led Los Altos to the CCS and NorCal Division II title matches, averaging 5.1 kills per set. She had a season-high 30 kills in a dramatic five-set loss to Archbishop Mitty in the Central Coast Section Division II final. She also notched 47 aces.
OH - Adlee Van Winden - Vintage (Napa), 6-1 JuniorNamed the Napa Valley Register's Offensive Player of Year, Van Winden recorded 50 aces, 448 kills and 320 digs to lead Vintage to a second-straight Monticello Empire League title and into the Sac-Joaquin Section D-II championship match. She was the Register's unanimous choice for 2013 All-County Volleyball Player of the Year for the second year in a row.
OH - Destiny Julye - Tehachapi, 5-10 JuniorJulye led Tehachapi to a 32-4 record with 488 kills, 40 aces, 45 blocks, 88 digs and 193 returns.
OH - Ashten Smith-Gooden - Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga), 6-2 Senior

Smith-Gooden ranked sixth in the Southern Section in hitting percentage (.482) and sixth in kills per game (5.5). She tallied 387 kills, 76 blocks and 160 digs. A repeat All-Baseline League selection, she was named to the Under Armour High School All-American team. She has signed with Cal.
MB - Torrey Van Winden - Vintage (Napa), 6-3 SophomoreTorrey teamed with Adlee Van Winden to lead the Crushers to a 28-5 record and the first round of the state playoffs. She was named the Napa Valley Register's Defensive POY after recoding 416 kills, 160 blocks and 129 digs.
MB - Bethany Mandon - Rocklin, 6-2 SeniorMandon, who had 290 kills as the Thunder won the SJS D-II section title, was named to the Sacramento Bee's All-Metro team. She will play for Point Loma Nazarene next season.
S - Kelsey Crawford - Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), 5-9 SeniorA MaxPreps All-American, Crawford was the quarterback for California's D-II state champions. Crawford averaged 10.6 assists per set and blocked 48 shots, had 233 digs and served 92 percent. She will attend Yale.
S - Jessie Prichard - Santiago (Corona), 5-7 SophomorePrichard was the playmaker on California's D-II runnerup team that finished 40-1. She provided 67 aces and 1,125 assists in 99 sets. She was selected to the all-CIF Southern Section team.
S - Jennifer Washle - Whittier Christian (La Habra), 5-9 Senior

Washle put up big numbers (1,213 assists/ 11.1 average), 46 aces, 209 digs and found time to block 16 shots as the Heralds went 33-7.
L/DS - Allyson Reines - Yuba City, 5-4 SophomoreReines was named MVP of the Tri-County Conference after leading Yuba City to its first undefeated TCC run since 2007. Reines recorded 611 digs and 446 service receptions with just 15 receiving errors. She also had 66 service aces.
L - Sarah Johnson - Mayfield (Pasadena), 5-7 SophomoreIn leading Mayfield to a 24-2 record, Johnson totaled 571 digs and 39 aces. She was named to the Pasadena Star All-Area team.
A-A - Kylie Miller - Rancho Cucamonga, 5-11 SophomoreThe versatile Miller had 230 kills, 92 aces, 232 digs and 716 assists as Rancho Cucamonga went 24-7. She was the Inland Valley Bulletin's Player of the Year and named to the all-CIF Southern Section team.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: OH - Kristin Depaoli - Enterprise (Redding), 6-0 SeniorA MaxPreps All-American, Depaoli was named the Northern Section and Redding Record Searchlight's Player of the Year after leading Enterprise to the state quarterfinals. The Hornets finished with a school record 42 wins as Depaoli recorded 756 kills, 86 aces and 356 digs.
OH - Kekai Whitford - Sage Hill (Newport Beach), 5-7 JuniorWhitford was named the Southern Section's 3A POY and Academy League MVP. She totaled 424 kills, 350 digs and 84 service aces.
OH - Jolie Rasmussen - Canyon Crest Academy (San Diego), 6-3 SophomoreRasmussen was named to the San Diego Union-Tribune All-Area team and all-San Diego Section team.
OH - Halland McKenna - Sage Hill (Newport Beach), 5-7 JuniorNamed all-CIF Southern Section first team, McKenna was a three-time first-team Academy League selection. She finished with 377 kills, 342 digs and 73 aces as Sage Hill reached the Southern Section D-III finals.
OH - Kelley Wirth - Campolindo (Moraga), 6-0 JuniorWirth finished with 585 kills, 123 digs and 114 blocks in 36 matches and was named the MVP of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League. She was named first team All-East Bay.
OH – Bryanna Davis - Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland), 5-11 SeniorDavis, a transfer from San Leandro, made a big impact in her one year with the Dragons in leading them to the NCS D-III title game. She was named the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division MVP and MVP of her league after recording 511 kills in 31 matches.
OH - Itali Andrade - Western Christian (Upland), 5-10 SeniorNamed the Ambassador League's Player of the Year, Andrade smacked 276 kills, served at 92 percent with 44 aces, had 260 digs and received 241 serves.
OH - Jenna Belton - Aptos, 6-1 Senior

Named the Santa Cruz League MVP, Belton had 261 digs, 277 serve receptions, 265 kills and committed just 13 service errors in 74 sets as Aptos lost only to state champion Valley Christian (San Jose) in the playoffs. She has signed with USC.
OH/MB - Ronika Stone - Valley Christian (San Jose), 6-3 SophomoreStone helped lead Valley Christian to the D-III state title with 384 kills, 42 aces, 92 blocks and 157 digs.
MB - Lana Brown - Shasta (Redding), 6-0 SeniorBrown led Shasta to 26 wins with 377 kills and 271 blocks. A MaxPreps All-American, she will play at Sacramento State.
MB - Colette Franz - Viewpoint (Calabasas), 6-0 JuniorFranz was named the Southern Section's 3AA Player of the Year after recording 331 kills, 28 blocks, 163 digs and leading 19-5 Viewpoint deep in the state playoffs.
MB - Lindsey Calvin - Central Valley Christian (Visalia), 6-0 JuniorCalvin recorded 315 kills, 51 aces and had 57.5 blocks. The MVP of the Central Sequoia League is being chased by several Division I colleges. She was the Times-Delta/Advance-Register Tulare County Volleyball Player of the Year.
S - McKenna Carroll - Enterprise (Redding), 5-8 SeniorCarroll led Enterprise to the Northern Section title and a 42-5 record. She recorded 1,233 assists in 122 sets, had 81 aces as a senior and was a MaxPreps All-American.
S - Maribel Matos - Balboa (San Francisco), SeniorMatos led Balboa to its first San Francisco City Section title and was the recipient of the CIF-SF Section's Player of the Year honor.
L - Tess Van Grouw - Central Valley Christian (Visalia), 5-8 SeniorVan Grouw led the team to the state finals as she recorded 627 digs, 49 aces and 96.2 percent serve percentage. She was a MaxPreps All-American.
L - Marissa Kuntz - Shasta (Redding), 5-6 SeniorNamed first team all-Record Searchlight and all-Northern Section, Kuntz averaged 6.2 digs per set, had 39 aces and received 456 serves.
L - Kyle Carlson - Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland), 5-6 Senior Carlson led the East Bay with 895 digs and was selected to the WACC-Foothill's first team.
A-A - Kirsten Mead - Valley Christian (San Jose), 5-11 Senior

Mead has signed with Santa Clara University after leading Valley Christian to the D-III state title. She had 282 kills, 602 assists, 295 digs, 79 aces and was named WCAL Player of the Year. She is a MaxPreps All-American.
A-A - McKenna Hollingsworth - Tri-City Christian (Vista), 6-0 SeniorHollingsworth completed her senior year with 480 kills, 41 blocks, 271 digs and 433 serve receptions as TCC won the San Diego Section D-III title. She was named to San Diego Union-Tribune's All-Section Team and was an Under Armour honoree. Hollingsworth will attend Oregon State. She was a MaxPreps All-American.
A-A - Maddie Dilfer - Valley Christian (San Jose), 5-11 SeniorA setter and right side hitter, Dilfer has signed with Notre Dame after leading Valley Christian to the state title. She recorded 257 kills, 588 assists, 362 digs and was the 2013 Cal-Hi Sports Player of the Year. A MaxPreps All-American, she is the daughter of former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: OH - Michaela Dews - Parker (San Diego) - 5-9 SeniorDews led Parker to the state title while averaging 20 kills per match during the playoffs. For the season, in 34 matches, she had 395 kills, 255 digs, 16 blocks, 41 aces and a 2.1 passer rating on 432 attempts. Dews, who will play at Harvard, was named league MVP, All-San Diego Section and to the San Diego Union-Tribune All-Area team.
OH - Nada Dragovic - Cantwell-Sacred Heart (Montebello), 6-2 SeniorDragovic led her team deep in the CIF playoffs with 474 kills, 33 aces, 68 blocks, 284 digs and 321 serve receptions. She was a MaxPreps All-American.
OH - Maddie Huber - Menlo (Atherton), 5-8 SeniorHuber was named the West Bay Athletic League's MVP after leading Menlo to a 32-6 record and a state finals berth. She will play at Princeton.
OH - Alli O'Banion - Dos Palos, 6-0 Senior

OH - Baylee Christian - Hemet, SeniorChristian averaged 5.5 kills and served 92 percent as Hemet went 22-2. She was named all-Southern Section.
OH - Riley Kelly - St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs), 6-0 JuniorKelly led the Swordsmen to a 27-8 season and the Southern Section semifinals with 439 kills and 61 aces (315 attempts). She was a first-team Southern Section selection.
OH/MB - Kathy McKiernan - Duarte, 6-0 JuniorThe versatile outside hitter/middle blocker did everything in helping the Falcons to their first Montview League title since 2006, earning league MVP honors. McKiernan's final numbers were impressive, finishing with 299 kills, 14 blocks, 94 digs and 50 aces. She led all D-IV hitters with a .535 average.
MH - Grace Minchin - Pacifica Christian (Santa Monica), 5-10 SeniorMinchin was named Southern Section 4A POY after leading her team deep in the playoffs (elimination loss was to eventual state champion Parker). She averaged 4.1 kills per set and recorded 43 aces, 29 blocks, 108 digs and 224 serve receptions.
MB - Melissa Samaniego - Woodlake, 5-7 Senior

Samaniego led Woodlake to the unbeaten East Sequoia title (10-0) and 24-5 record. She totaled 258 kills, 32 aces, 157 blocks (116 solo), 102 digs and 246 serve receptions. She was named league MVP and to the All-Tulare County team.
S - Tristan Self - Hemet, 5-7 SeniorSelf
led Hemet to a 22-2 season and put up big numbers in doing so: 742
assists, 297 digs, 35 blocks, 56 aces and 100 kills. Self is a
three-time all-Southern Section performer.
S - Jayann De Hoog - Bakersfield Christian, JuniorDe Hoog led Bakersfield Christian to a 28-5 season as she averaged 8.7 assists, recorded 242 digs and served 83 aces.
S - Clara Madsen - Laguna Blanca (Santa Barbara), 5-7 SeniorA two-time all-Southern Section player, Madsen led Laguna Blanca to the Southern Section finals.
S - Elisa Merten - Menlo (Atherton), 5-9 Junior Merten averaged 9.1 assists and added 203 digs and 39 aces as quarterback of the state runner-up team.
S - Jillian Saenz - St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs), 5-6 Junior

Saenz averaged 10.6 assists and served 88 aces (375 attempts) in leading St. Paul in 2013.
L/DS - Sarah Benjamin - Parker (San Diego), 5-8 SeniorBenjamin was named all league, all section and all San Diego Union-Tribune after Parker's state title. She had a passer rating of 2.2 on 449 attempts, 322 digs, 28 aces and 73 assists. She has signed with Stanford.
L - Colleen McNulty - Piedmont, 5-3 SeniorMcNulty, who will play at Miami (Ohio), averaged 6.1 digs for a 19-11 team. She also recorded 53 aces and had 471 serve receptions.
A-A - Lani Shetler - Escondido Adventist Academy, 5-6 SeniorShetler was named Player of the Year in the Citrus League after leading the Hawks to a 25-2 season and 10-0 record to win the league title. She averaged 4.1 kills and had 120 aces in 324 serves, 154 digs and 285 assists.
A-A - Heidi Dyer - Saddleback Valley Christian (San Juan Capistrano), 6-2 JuniorDyer was named Southern Section 4AA POY after leading her team to a 32-5 record.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: OH - Arela Williams - La Jolla Country Day, 5-8 SeniorWilliams was named to the San Diego Union-Tribune's All-Area team after leading La Jolla Country Day to the state D-V title (finals win was over four-time champion Branson). On the season, Williams recorded 501 kills, 317 digs and returned 539 serves and was a MaxPreps All-American.
OH - Marine Hall Poirier - Woodside Priory (Portola Valley), Senior

Poirer led Woodside Priory to the Section title game and was named All-West Bay Athletic League first team.

OH - Sarah Wallace - Branson (Ross), 5-11 SeniorWallace, who led Branson to its fifth-straight title game match, had 517 kills and 60 aces on the season. She was a MaxPreps All-American and will play collegiately at Swathmore in Pennsylvania.
OH - Emily Baptista - Hilmar, 6-2 SophomoreIn leading Hilmar to 38 wins, Baptista put up big numbers with 772 kills, 78 aces, 31 blocks and 303 digs. She was named the Merced Sun-Star's Player of the Year.
OH/MH - Clarivel Castillo - Los Molinos, 6-0 SeniorAs she did in 2012, the MaxPreps All-American turned in big numbers as Los Molinos won 39 times: 627 kills, 67 aces, 97 blocks and 612 digs.
MH - Maddie Doud - St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda), 5-10 SeniorDoud totaled 111 blocks, 304 kills and 100 aces as St. Joe's won 33 times.
MB - Katie Grant - Minarets (O'Neals), 6-1 SeniorGrant averaged 4.2 digs and 2.6 kills, served 94 percent (57 aces) and blocked 95 shots in 90 sets as the Mustangs reached the state semifinals.
MH - Amber Erhahon - Albany, 6-0 Senior Erhahon totaled 283 kills and earned MVP honors in the TCAL-Rock Division and was a first team all-East Bay Area squad honoree.
MB - Breanna Kirklen - Classical Academy (Escondido), 5-10 SeniorKirklen led Classical to a 25-5 record and San Diego Section D-V title with 198 kills and 159 blocks.
MB - Summer Vercruyssen - Durham, 5-8 JuniorA front row force with 299 kills and 149 blocks, Vercruyssen led Durham to a 27-11 record before losing to Branson in the first round of the state playoffs. She also served 91 percent with 58 aces.
S - Maddy Schoenberger - Branson (Ross), 6-0 Sophomore

Schoenberger made an immediate impact as Branson reached the state finals for the fifth-straight year (finishing second) when she distributed 1,107 assists and served 97 percent with 49 aces. She also blocked 50 shots and had 218 digs and earned MaxPreps All-American honors.
S - Andie Shelton - Ripon Christian, 5-9 SeniorShelton had team highs with 202 assists, 181 kills, 37 aces, 27 blocks and 103 digs as the Knights went undefeated in league competition for the fourth-consecutive season and reached the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals. An Under Armour All-American, Shelton will play at the University of the Pacific. She was a MaxPreps All-American.
S - Annie Hasselmann - La Jolla Country Day, 6-0 JuniorThe playmaker for the state title team with 7.9 assists per match (628 total), Hasselmann was an all-Section pick. She also was a 95 percent server with 46 aces, 29 blocks, 113 digs and had a kill percentage of 87.4 with 104 kills in 79 sets.
L - Val Ewing - Hilmar, 5-4 SeniorEwing led Hilmar to the state semifinals and a 38-10 record in recording 852 digs. She also had only two service errors in 410 attempts (99.5 percent). She was a MaxPreps All-American.
L - Alexa Martinez - St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda), SeniorMartinez tallied 607 digs, 624 serve receptions and was a 92 percent server (30 aces) as the Pilots won 33 matches and reached the semifinals of the state tournament.
A-A - Darriyan Thomas - California School for the Deaf (Fremont), 5-8 SeniorIn leading the Eagles to a 24-8 season and an unbeaten record in the Bay Counties League, Thomas had 279 kills, 20 blocks, 154 aces, 358 digs and only 10 errors in 224 service receptions.
A-A - Lizzy Tardieu - Santa Catalina (Monterey), 5-4 SeniorNamed the Monterey County player of the year, Tardieu will play at the University of San Diego. Playing setter for the first time in 2013, she responded with 622 assists and led Santa Catalina to a league title. In four seasons at Santa Catalina, Tardieu compiled nearly 1,500 digs, including 283 this past fall in a part-time role in the back row.
A-A - Ava Payton - Sutter, 5-7 SeniorNamed to the All-Area squad for the second consecutive season, Payton led the Huskies to their 17th-straight Butte View League championship and kept their 80-game BVL winning streak alive. She slammed 241 kills and had 141 digs and 187 service receptions. She was named BVL MVP and has signed with AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.
A-A - Sami Whitaker - Riverside Christian, 5-7 Senior Whitaker had 304 digs, 155 kills and served 74 aces (365 attempts) as Riverside Christian went deep in state playoffs.
