Baseball Game Preview: Gilbert Tigers vs. St. Mary's Knights

Gilbert is a perfect 3-0 against St. Mary since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Gilbert Tigers will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the St. Mary's Knights at 3:45 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Gilbert is coming home in high spirits after they had to open their season on the road against Saguaro. Gilbert's pitchers stepped up to hand Saguaro a 4-0 shutout on Wednesday.

Johhny King tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only a hit while striking out six over six innings pitched.

On the hitting side, Gilbert's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Will Bates, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Another was Hayden Leach, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, St. Mary's posted their closest victory since March 1, 2024 on Wednesday. They had just enough and edged out Notre Dame Prep 11-9.

Luis Mejia was excellent, scoring three runs while going 3-for-5. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in runs. Sean Berry was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Everything went Gilbert's way against St. Mary's in their previous meeting back in February of 2022, as Gilbert made off with a 13-0 win. Will Gilbert repeat their success, or does St. Mary's have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
