Vela is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They blew past Rio Grande City 56-0 on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Sabercats, who have now won five contests by 36 points or more so far this season.
Vela's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tyler Ruiz led the charge by throwing for 169 yards and three TDs, while also punching in one rushing score. Christopher Gonzalez also helped with two touchdowns in total.
Meanwhile, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial's game on Friday was all tied up 14-14 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They took a 31-20 hit to the loss column at the hands of Flour Bluff. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Eagles, who until this matchup were averaging 14.1 points allowed.
Vela will have to contain Andrew Charlebois as he made an impact in Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial's last game. He picked up 116 receiving yards and one score, and also rushed for 54 yards and one TD. Charlebois showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 69 yards.
Even if they lost, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial's defensive line still kept up the pressure with five sacks. Luis Torres refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself. He was another major factor on D, picking up 1.5 sacks and making ten total tackles (3.0 for loss).
