Baseball Game Preview: Washington Hatchets vs. Loogootee Lions

Washington is 6-1 against Loogootee since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Hatchets will host the Lions at 5:00 p.m. Washington will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.

On Tuesday, Washington was able to grind out a solid victory over Mt. Vernon, taking the game 6-3. The win continues a trend for the Hatchets in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won six in a row.

Alton Ostby made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Ostby wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Trey James, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

Meanwhile, Loogootee made easy work of Wood Memorial on Tuesday and carried off a 13-3 victory.

The team relied heavily on Tanner Phillips, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4. Another was Rawlings Bell, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Loogootee was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .531. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wood Memorial only posted a batting average of .350.

Washington's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Loogootee, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Washington has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Loogootee struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Washington might still be hurting after the 8-0 loss they got from Loogootee in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. Can the Hatchets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
