Softball Recap: Rustburg Comes Up Short

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Tuesday as neither Rustburg nor Brookville made it on the board until the sixth inning. The Red Devils fell just short of the Bees by a score of 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Red Devils have suffered since April 22, 2024.

Laila Bigham spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up 15 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Rustburg saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kamryn Powell, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Rustburg has also been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-6 record this season. As for Brookville, their record is now 8-5.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Rustburg will challenge rival Jefferson Forest at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Red Devils 2.6, the Cavaliers 1.4) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Brookville is set to square off against their familiar foe Liberty at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
