Softball Recap: Mize Comes Up Short

Mize had lost three straight at home, but on Friday they dropped down to 20-13-1 to make it four. They came up short against the Loyd Star Hornets, falling 10-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Bulldogs have suffered since March 2nd.

Mize saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lila Gordon, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

As for Loyd Star, they are on a roll lately: they've won 17 of their last 18 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 27-3 record this season. The result was nothing new for Loyd Star, who have now won 20 contests by six runs or more so far this season.

On Loyd Star's side, Layla Burt was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Burt has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and one run. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Maddie Kate Britt was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kenzie Kay Lofton, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

As of now, neither Mize nor Loyd Star have any future games scheduled.
