Baseball Recap: Independence Triumphs

While Independence's victory against East Mecklenburg wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Patriots skirted past the Eagles 15-14. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Patriots have posted since March 6th.

Blake Brown looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Independence is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 4-9 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Brian Crowder, who went 2-for-5 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Anthony Mosher, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

Independence kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 4-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

The victory made it two in a row for Independence and bumps their season record up to 6-10. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.0 runs over those games. As for East Mecklenburg, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-7.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Independence will head out to square off against Rocky River at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Ravens have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 17.56 runs per game on average), something the Patriots will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for East Mecklenburg, they will head out on the road to face off against Charlotte Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 11.1 runs per game this season.
